Holy sh@#$#t we bought a house. Seriously holy sh#$t. This has been in the works for a while but I didn’t want to jinx it, especially since it is an old house and the reason it could fall through would be due to old house issues. But I am excited (and terrified) to say that Luke and I are now homeowners. Holy sh#$t.
We started looking for a home last year but really started to pursue it seriously this past January. And boy was it a learning experience. First off looking at houses sounds great, but it is exhausting. Also, if you haven’t heard, the housing market is completely bonkers in the Bay Area. Totally different from most other places in the country.
Last summer we ventured out to Oakland because well we heard that Oakland was the new Brooklyn, did you hear that? It is super cool and hipster. Turns out we are neither but wannabes because we loved it over there. The food scene is taking off (which I love) and it is only 20 minutes into the heart of downtown San Francisco so it is pretty convenient. So fast forward 6 months when we were ready to buy a house we started looking both in SF and in Oakland.
We kept looking in Oakland and in San Francisco and eventually found our current house. It is a quaint home built in the early 1900s in the Rockridge area of Oakland with tons of character. It needs some work but I think we will have fun making it our own. I am excited for a bunch of different things in this house, but most notably my own washer and dryer. When I lived in New York I used to say I will know I have struck it rich when I have my own washer and dryer. Well I am not sure I have struck it rich… yet…but I am thrilled to have my own laundry. It is the little things in life, right? I am also so excited to have a backyard and a garden mostly so I don’t have to create another hanging garden like last year. (It was a good idea in theory but my neighbors disagreed)
Plus you know who is really excited – Chumley. He gets to hang out in his very first and very own back yard. Which also means I don’t have to walk down 3 flights of stairs to take him out 3 times a day. Again, the little things .
Here are the pics of the house. We move in next weekend – wish me luck! Oaktown we are coming for you!
I think I am going to welcome Luke home every night by sitting on this front stoop with a martini in my hand
Family Room/room that we are not sure what to do with yet
The kitchen. That stoves is vintage and is kind of amazing and kind of terrifying

I am planning on giving updates on what we change and how we decorate, as well as places we explore in Oakland. So stay tuned.
